What is Latte Art?

By Ted Bendixson

Latte art is both a gustatory delight and a fleeting artistic vision of foamy futility. Cappuccino brings out the existentialist in us all as we realize that beauty and perfection can only last as long as bubbles contain air. Or maybe not. Maybe it's just downright fun to make hearts, tantalizing swirls, and little people out of milk foam. Can you think of a better way to spend a Sunday morning? Ha, didn't think so. We now introduce you to the world of Latte art, a place where eccentric and ordinary collide, a fusion of ferociously hot temperatures and the cold and calculating methodical nature of the artist. Come join us and learn the skills that will make you a genius, if only for the fraction of a moment when your Latte art retains its glory. Come be a Latte art creator and connoisseur!

All Latte art begins with the creation of the perfect cup of coffee. Espresso brings out the darkness that contrasts the bright white milk foam to be artfully mixed and transformed into the aesthetic satisfaction of our appetite for caffeine. Only the best espresso shot will suffice, and by this we mean espresso shots with a noticeably thick brown crema at the surface. The crema is a kind of foam, not all too different from milk foam, that results from a properly brewed espresso shot. If the conditions in your espresso machine aren't quite right, you don't have the right espresso roast, or you have left your espresso shots sitting out for longer than a few minutes, you will fail to achieve the perfect light brown crema necessary for all of your creations.

You also need to create a delicate milk foam for every cup. There are many ways to achieve this, and everyone seems to have a different opinion about the matter. We have found that more fat equals better foam. This doesn't mean you have to use all half and half for your Latte art creations, but it will help to add a splash in every time you steam your milk as it provides more viscosity to the foam. We have also determined that a properly refrigerated steam cup helps to give you more time to foam the milk before it becomes too hot. Our next section details the proper steaming technique for getting the most foam for your milk.

Although true beauty and perfection never last, they are still worth pursuing in every cup. Latte art is a fun way to get the most out of your cappuccino while impressing your friends with your finely tuned frothy skill set. We indulge you to join us for the rest of this beginner series as you explore your hidden artistic talents and latent penchant for existentialist expression in coffee form. There is no time other than the present.
