There are stats about everything- from cigarette to choppers to the bears in Alaska. But we aren’t interested in them. This site is dedicated to coffee freaks like me, and if its statistics I’m talking about, it’s gonna be coffee statistics. Here are some numbers to put your math in action:
• Coffee is the world’s 2nd most consumed beverage. What is the first? Why, water of course. It is also the most traded consumable commodity in the world.
• Finland holds the record for the highest per capita coffee consumption, but you don’t have to be sad if you are from U.S., because it buys the highest amount of coffee. Also, U.S. consumes 1/5th of all coffee produced in the world, thus becoming the top
consumer of coffee.
• As specialty coffee is getting popular, its sale is growing at 20% each year and presently stands at 8% of all coffee production.
• United States coffee drinkers collectively spend about 18 billion dollars per year on coffee. This amounts to about $165 per person, per year.
• Taking the average, men drink more coffee than women- men 1.9 cups each day and women 1.4 cups each day.
• The per capita consumption of coffee in US is 9.8lbs per year.
• For each $3 worth of latte sold, the traditional farmer gets 2 cents.
• Fair trade coffee sales are rising and the rates of growth have been higher than 100%
• Mexico is the largest producer of fair trade coffee, with 23% of the world’s share.
• Independent coffee shops in US make about $12 billion annually.
• There are about 24,000 coffee shops in the U.S.
• More than 50% of U.S. citizens over the age of 18, drink coffee regularly. There are 30 million Americans who like specialty coffee beverages like latte, mocha, espresso, café mocha, iced/frozen coffee drinks, and cappuccino etc.
• The average volume of a coffee cup is 9 ounces.
• 65% of coffee is taken at breakfast time. 30% is taken between meals and 5% is taken with other meals.
• 35% people like black coffee, while 65% people like to add sugar and/or cream.
