Three Tips for Latte Portraiture
By Ted Bendixson
So you want to be a true latte artist? You want to capture the fleeting expressions on your friends’ faces and bring them to life in every new cup. You want to live in the moment. You want to learn latte portraiture. If you have the time, and you have mastered every latte design known to man, the next step is to learn how to create latte portraits. When you start getting good, your friends will love you and they will never want to drink a sip of their coffee. It’s a great way to drive them crazy.
Before you begin to learn latte portraiture, it’s a good idea to master espresso brewing and milk foaming. It is only when these two components are done perfectly that you will be able to bring out the best in your friends. Remember to use a burr grinder when grinding espresso, and keep the brew time between five to eight seconds. When you are steaming milk, angle the steam wand to the side of the pitcher near the end of the steaming process to guarantee a gentle and delicate foam.
Every latte portrait begins with a simple circular blob of white foam on top of the brown crema. You will use a sharp metal stirrer to create the finer details. Where you take it after this is up to your artistic talents and ambitions. Nevertheless, there are a few guidelines for making latte portraits that will make the process go much more smoothly.
- Keep a towel handy. You will be continually dipping your metal stirrer into the brown crema foam, so this is essential for maintaining consistency in your design and avoiding placing certain colors where you don’t want them.
- Shape the ears and jaw first. Create the ears by pulling the brown crema foam on the side inward in a U shape. You can then make the chin by pushing the white foam near the chin outward, matching it to your friend’s face shape.
- Don’t try to be realistic. Your medium is simply too limited. Opt for a more stylized and expressive version of your friends. It will last longer and mean a lot more to them.
