Hearts Galore
By Ted Bendixson
Anybody who has poured a heart before will know how to do this one. Hearts Galore is a single heart in the bottom corner of the cup with a chain of hearts surrounding it in an arc. You will need a teaspoon for placing foam dots as well as a pointed metal object for striking through them. Hearts Galore is no more difficult to do than a single heart, and you can get as creative as you want with it. Try it with a double or triple heart pour to take it the next level.
It is always a good idea to properly steam your milk and make the best espresso possible for any of your latte art creations. Be sure your espresso is finely ground and check the brewtime throughout the day. Toward the end of the steaming process, bring the steam wand to the edge of the steam pitcher to get the milk to swirl around. This ensures a uniform froth perfect for making art. Take your time and every creation will taste as good as it looks.
We are kind of cheating with the extra hearts on hearts galore. While some latte art purists might turn up their noses at this, it really does simplify the process. The extra hearts are made with tiny dots of foam placed on top of the cup with a small spoon. We then take the pointed end of a metal stirrer and run it through the dots to make the heart shapes. There is one distinct advantage to doing it this way. You can place the hearts wherever and however you want. It leads to endless possibilities.
To get the classic Hearts Galore design, you need to try to get your main heart into the bottom corner of the coffee cup. Begin about 1/4 of the way from the edge of the cup and begin your pour. As you pour, the heart will start to take shape. Don’t worry about your heart getting crushed on the side of the cup. You are actually pouring a smaller heart, so this shouldn’t be an issue. When the top edge of your heart shape is about 1/4 of the way from the other side of the cup, you can lift up the steam pitcher, strike through it, and finish.
By now, you should have a single diagonal heart in the bottom corner of your coffee cup. If it doesn’t quite look like this, try again and place it about 30 degrees from the handle of the cup on either side. You can try that, or you can use paper cups. Nobody ever makes a mistake with paper cups.
The rest is simple decor to compliment the diagonal heart. Take out your small spoon and place some dots moving in an arc shape around your heart. They can be as big as you want, and you can have as many as you want. It’s up to your artistry. Once the dots are in place, you can magically transform them into hearts by quickly striking the metal stirrer through them. Make sure you maintain an arcing motion when doing this. Otherwise, the hearts will look out of place.
Feel free to experiment with this one. This tutorial is more about a quick way to add some extra decor to any of your latte art creations. Add it to a rosetta or a tulip, just for something different. Show it to your friends and always enjoy!
